No monthly fee, 10% of everything you earn, plus processing, conversion and payout fees. Tiers, free membership, up to 10 tier-gated chat spaces, posts emailed in full. No course builder, no gamification, no list sync beyond CSV and Zapier.

Memberful
A paywall and billing layer for a site you already own, from the Patreon family. $49 a month plus 4.9% of every payment, on top of your own Stripe. No community of its own: it gates Discord, Discourse or Circle. No courses, no app, no digest. What it does have is the best member import on this site, a clean export, native newsletters, and WordPress, Mailchimp and Kit integrations.
The short version
Memberful doesn't want to be your community. It wants to be the cash register and the login for a community you run somewhere else: your WordPress site, your Discord server, your Circle space, your podcast feed. It's been doing that since 2013, Patreon bought it in 2021, and the footer still says "Memberful is a Patreon company."
The pitch is ownership. Your domain on every page, your own Stripe account holding the money, your member list exportable with thirty columns. That's real, and it's the reason publishers like Punchbowl News run on it. The trade-off is that nearly everything a Skool or Circle does out of the box, Memberful either doesn't do or hands to an integration.
Pricing we checked
One plan, plus enterprise.
- Standard: $49/mo plus a 4.9% transaction fee. Everything included: checkout, subscriptions of any cadence, one-time payments, group plans, pay-what-you-want, free and paid trials, coupons, gift purchases, global tax collection, newsletters, podcasts, downloads, the website builder, a landing page builder, custom domains, a referral program, retention discounts, cancellation surveys, unlimited staff accounts, unlimited members.
- Enterprise: custom. Volume-based pricing, success management, custom migration.
Free to try "for as long as you like"; you're charged only when you go live and accept payments. So it's a free sandbox and a paid product, not a free plan. Rated "Free trial only."
Transaction fees
4.9% of every purchase and renewal, flat, on top of Stripe's processing fee. On a $10/mo membership that's 49 cents to Memberful and roughly 59 cents to Stripe. Rated 4.9%.
Payments
Stripe, and only Stripe. The docs say "We don't support any other payment processors at this time." You connect your own account, money deposits straight to your bank, and Memberful takes its cut as a Stripe application fee, which is why the docs list Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico and Thailand as countries it can't serve. Apple Pay, Google Pay and Link work through Stripe. Rated "Stripe only."
Community and gamification
There isn't one inside Memberful. What there is: native integrations that gate access to a community elsewhere. Discord is the deepest: each plan maps to an active role and a trial role, members authorise a bot from their account page, syncing runs in the background, and the member export includes a Discord ID column. Discourse and Circle are also listed. The product page says it plainly: "Easily integrate with the most popular community platforms like Discord, Discourse, and Circle."
Posts you publish through Memberful can have "integrated comments," which is the closest thing to a discussion feature.
No spaces, no feed, no gamification, no events. Rated "No" for spaces, "None" for gamification, "No" for calendar.
Courses
Not native. The pricing page lists "Courses" under supported content, and the product page clarifies that this means "LMS integrations." Memberful gates the course; something else delivers it. Rated "No."
The three email questions
Does it send members a digest? No. There's nothing to digest. Transactional emails (receipts, renewals, cancellations) are automated and customisable, and that's it. Rated "None."
Can you email your members from inside it? Yes, as newsletters. Write a post, choose which plans receive it, schedule the send, and optionally host it on the web. That's broadcasts, not sequences, and there's no automation builder for marketing. For nurture sequences you'd use the native Mailchimp or Kit integrations. Rated "Broadcasts only."
Can you get your list out? Yes, thoroughly. Members → filter (active, inactive, free signup, all-access, all) → Actions → Export CSV, with a date range. The columns include name, email, Stripe customer ID, Discord ID, full address, phone, custom fields, total spend, plan, auto-renew, expiration date, coupon, whether they're subscribed to posts, referrer and all five UTM fields. One row per subscription, so members on two plans appear twice. Orders, metrics, cancellations and activity export separately. Members flow natively into Mailchimp and Kit, and there's a full API, webhooks and Zapier. Rated "Native ESP integration."
Getting in and getting out
Members in: the best on this site. Members → Actions → Import members gives you a sample CSV and a price-reference file with every plan's shortcode. The import carries personal details, address, the plan and price, renewal date and auto-renew settings, and you can subscribe one member to several plans with multiple rows. Imported members get no emails, not even a welcome, so you control the announcement. There are dedicated guides for migrating from Substack and from Stripe. Group subscriptions are the exception: import the group manager, then add members by invite link. Rated "Yes."
Members out: the CSV above. Posts and comments: no export we could find. Rated "Members CSV only."
Courses in: no courses. Rated "No courses."
Mobile app
None. There's a "custom app API" for building your own, and the partner page lists agencies who do that. Rated "None."
Affiliate program
The partner program is for agencies and developers (a profile listing, co-branded collateral, referrals from Memberful), not a commission scheme for creators. Nothing to put on the listing.
Who it's for
- Publishers, podcasters and writers with an existing WordPress site who want to charge for access and keep every page on their own domain.
- Anyone running a Discord community who wants real paid tiers mapped to roles without Discord's own subscription cut.
- Teams who'd rather own Stripe and the data than get a feed and a leaderboard.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who needs the community itself. You'll be paying Memberful and whoever hosts the community.
- Anyone who wants courses, an app, or a digest without stitching tools together.
- Small memberships where 4.9% plus $49 is a large share of revenue. At $500/mo of subscriptions that's about 15% all in before Stripe.
Known limitation
No native community, feed, courses, app or digest: Memberful gates access to Discord, Discourse, Circle or your WordPress site. Stripe is the only processor, and it isn't available in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico or Thailand. 4.9% on every payment on top of $49 a month and Stripe's fees. Newsletters are broadcasts, not sequences.
